New to online poker?

Then this post is for you. It takes a little while getting used to playing poker online – what you read here should guide you in the right direction to have lots of fun and make some profit.

Lots of people hear about online poker and want to give it a try but are not very sure of the rules. Online is a great place to learn but obviously do not play for money until you have a good grasp for both the mechanics and strategies of the game.

Sites like these:-

Pokerstars

Ultimate Bet

Are great places to get the feel for online poker. They have plenty of tables where you can play for play money both in ring games and in tournaments varying from 9 players in a competition to over 10,000. They have two of the best interfaces around and are good places to get the feel for the game.

There is a wide range of games that you can play online in a range of forms. There are ring games and there are tournaments. Some players can play both enjoyably and profitably but many soon prefer one to the other. If you are starting to play online you will soon work out what you enjoy and what your good at. If you start playing for money before you have a feel for online play you could find yourself betting all your chips on rubbish because you pressed the wrong button.

Once you have a feel for on-line play you need to establish your priorities and start thinking about bankroll management. Bankroll management is boring but poor bankroll management will deny even play money players from benefiting from the fruits of their labour. If you want to play straight away for real money then you need to start thinking about what limits you will set on your deposits. At Winningstart.com we know our way around all the major (and many of the minor) poker sites so if you let us know your criteria we can easily recommend sites specifically to suit your needs.

If you decide that you never (or not in the foreseeable future) want to play any game in which you can win money – then that’s fine – there are plenty games for you. There are even one off freerolls where you can win shares in racehorses and poker books etc. Otherwise you need to set up a Netteller account. You will find that you can deposit on many sites with credit and debit cards but you can’t withdraw. Even if you only are playing in free money games you can win good money in these games and you should ensure that you can cash out any wins without then having to set up a Netteller account to do so. Neteller is safe and effective. Whilst there can be small charges involved these are usually covered by the poker companies.

OK you have a feel for playing online, have a Netteller account and have a bankroll strategy that may or may not involve depositing what next?

First and foremost if you are playing for real money I strongly recommend that you do not play in big multi-table tournaments. True they are great fun but the prize structure is so skewed that you get very little if you don’t finish in the top 8 or so. That’s 8 or so out of 2000 etc. With 2000 players there are sure to be a few excellent experienced players and it will be hard to beat them to the top places. If you are new to online poker you should really develop your skills either in ring games or in smaller tournaments such as sit and goes with 9,10 or 20 people in them. If you want to play big tournaments as many of us do learn the ropes here. As much as you play big tournaments you should probably play really cheap ones or what are known as freerolls – free tournaments.

If you are going to deposit then clear here to go to our first time depositor’s guide. The rest of this post is going to cover free games.

You need to decide whether you are trying to develop a bankroll so that you can play real $$ games without ever depositing or whether you just one to go for one off wins which you can cash out.

If you are trying to create a bankroll then I recommend the following strategies and tips:

1) play in our own free tournaments- these games are designed to help you try to build a bankroll as well as learning and improving your game. There is also more scope for feedback than in usual games.

2) Go to Royal Vegas poker:

When you go here they give you a free 10$ - what more could you want? There are plenty of good games here as well (freerolls etc) for you to play on. Also click here and see about a few other sites that give you money for nothing if you are a new member.

3) Look at our freeroll guide. This shows you when all the best games are at particular times.

4) beta testing – there are some sites that are establishing themselves and sometimes still at the testing stages. Sometimes you can actually win a few dollars from free sit and go games! They often offer the best freerolls but can change at short notice so we don’t include them in our main guide. They are in a separate section – here.

5) look out on the forum for special events. We will not generally run huge freerolls but we certainly will do all we can to tell you about them.

I am writing guides at the moment that will help you further and once written will add links below. Good luck and I hope you get as much fun and profit as I do from online poker.
