Online casinos have many advantages over casinos in the “real world”. First and foremost you can play anywhere, anytime. You can play for five minutes after work if you want to or when you get up in the morning. You can play in your work clothes or in your pyjamas.

Whatever your game is you can find it online and you can find it with some of the most favourable rules possible for you to play with. The house edge in many of the games is lower than it would be in the real world so take advantage of this! If progressive jackpots are your thing the online world is full of them. You just need to look a little.

As well as everything else online play is a lot quicker than in the live world. Firstly you don’t have to travel anywhere to play, just do a little bit of web browsing. Secondly dealer times, machine times etc are much quicker than their real world equivalents. As well as “the house” you can also speed up your own play with the use of various auto-play buttons and settings so as well as speeding up your play if the tension gets too much you can go and make yourself a cup of tea and still be wagering.

The speed of online play is a double-edged sword as well as wagering a lot quicker you can lose money a lot quicker. It’s very easy to click away a lot of money and not even realise it. So be careful. Similarly it is easy to bet 500$ in one blackjack hand without any eyebrows being raised or even feeling any pressure about the whole situation. Also the fact that you do not see the money means that many people do not fully appreciate what they have won or lost, what they are wagering etc. This is one of the reasons I recommend everyone setting up a Neteller account. The quicker access you get to your money, the more real it will feel to you and the more chance you have of treating it with some respect. Online play is a lot of fun, do not get too worried but you need to be sensible with it.

Bankroll Management
If you are engaging in any form of online gambling it is important that you make decisions about what you are willing to wager each day/week/month and what you will do with winnings. People who do not do this will often find even when they have been lucky it all gets wasted on future bets etc. You can deposit almost instantly to and from many accounts make sure you do not bet more than you can afford. Make realistic rules before you start playing and stick to them.

As well as issues relating to depositing you also have issues relating to cash outs. You need to record all the details of any cash outs including any deposit code, the time, date and site etc. Some sites will transfer the money pretty much straight away others will take weeks etc and will need to be chased up. If you are needing 25$ in Intercasino to play in a tournament there then make sure that you actually have 25$ that can be in your neteller account (if not in intercasino) in time. Similarly if you want to take 1000$ out of your gambling accounts for Christmas then do not do this on Christmas Eve. Allow reasonably large periods of time for the casinos to give you the money.

Depositing
Next step depositing. Firstly set up a Neteller account if you have not done so already. You will often not need a Neteller account to deposit but you will need some sort of account to withdraw. The harder it is to withdraw the harder it is to view casino winnings as real. That is a bad thing! So create a Neteller account first off. You do not need to deposit with neteller (though you will often get better bonuses if you do) but you should have an account in place.

Choosing where to play
Any site that we have links to is worth playing on. It’s as simple as that. We do not recommend bad casinos. You need to decide what factors you want most. Do you want to be offered great bonuses, do you want good support, how important is the feel of the site, how safe is my money and how quickly will I get my winnings if I get some luck on my side…all these things are important but are not all equally important to everyone.

I have included a list of all the sites that winningstart has a relationship with including (where appropriate) short reviews of mine and others experiences there. Highlighting what sort of player it would suit, warning players of any clauses in the terms and conditions that could effect their play etc. Click here to see my list.

If slots tournaments are your thing (I might be in a minority here) then don’t go for a site that does not have them. If you like black jack then does the site have blackjack tables? Do they have favourable rules such as Surrender and the ability to resplit aces? Do you like the look and feel of the blackjack tables there?

If you are new to casinos you might want to start with sites that give you some free money to play with or free spins (from which you can win) at the slots machines. See my guide to this here.

what sites are respectable and safe?
Most of the sites I recommend (through links) I have played on, deposited on and got the money withdrawn easy enough. Casinomeister.com is a good place to go to get some more information on good safe sites. However they exclude some sites for fairly arbitrary reasons and for some reasons that you may or may not agree with. For example a site that spams affiliates or gets women to streak at a football match to me is not a reason why a customer shouldn’t deposit there. Still any site that is on there avoid list is there for a reason and you should think long and hard before depositing there.

Before you deposit on a site not recommended by here or Casinomeister check to see if the site is on any blacklists (see Casinomeister for example). Just because a site is listed as safe though does not make it safe, there are risks that you undertake any time you give money to someone and this is true with online casinos as well. The casino could go bust or could get taken over by someone adopting unfair practices etc. Just because a site is not listed in Casinomeister (or anyone else’s) blacklists does not make them safe. It is easy to set up a rogue casino site do not let them get your money.
Generally speaking sites with badly written (with errors or contradictions or just spelling errors) text, links not working etc. suggest a fly by night operation who are best avoided. If you do not see anyone talking about a site it might be better to avoid it and stick with sites where you know other people are not having problems with cashouts or anything else.

OK what games do I want to be on the site i am going to play on?
Do you want Blackjack straight up – Starluck casino has this – but so do many others. Intercasino has nice blackjack tables in my view as well. Its part a matter of taste – what LOOKS good, what feels good, what layout will stop me putting all my chips in by mistake etc. Also which site has the best rules, slots with the lowest house edge etc.

If you like Blackjack tournaments then Global Player are well worth a look.

If you like slots I can strongly recommend Platinum play. Some sites have loads of games that are all actually just the same thing. These guys have a good deal of variety (although they are far from alone in this). Riverbelle has pretty much the same games as Platimum Play.

If you try a few sites you will soon find out what set ups you like, what looks, feels and works good for you. Some sites enable you to play with “play money” before you deposit. These are good ways of learning how to play the games.

Some sites are much quicker for cashouts than others. Long established sites are always to be more strongly recommended than other sites. Quite often casinos start online without sufficient start capital and they pay withdrawals from new sign ups etc. This can take time. With some casinos going out of business you want to make sure you will get your money. Sometimes a small site with a great bonus is actually something to avoid.

Understanding software and casino groups
If you like say platinum play and want to try another site. You are happy with the set up their and most of the games you can play then playing on some of the other fortune lounge sites would be a good idea. The terms and conditions are similar (but not the same so be careful) and they use the same software (microgaming). If you didn’t like certain aspects about the customer service etc that would not necessarily rule out the other casinos in the group but you might be better looking somewhere else first.

Certainly microgaming is great software but I quite like getting variety and going on to different sites where 90% of the games are the same as each other is not exactly what I want. There is nothing wrong with jumping about to sites with different software providers but you might want to do a little more background research before choosing a site with software you have not heard of before. Many sites have their software audited by third parties. This is useful because it would be so easy for sites to “fake” odds in their favour. Just remember though that just because someone says they have been audited it does not mean that they have been.

Understanding bonuses
Bonuses come in roughly three types free plays, free money (non sticky) and free money (sticky). Then there are often play through requirements and certain games are excluded from the play through requirements. Confused yet?

Ok freeplays
These start out as pretty simple. They are like 20 minutes or 200 spins or 200$ worth of credits or 15$ free etc. Then they have all sorts of strange conditions attached before cashing out. That said they are still often great deals. Just read the small print before you quit your day job. Free plays are quite different from free cash. The sites offering 15$ free often have no requirements other than that you play though the money 20 times or so. These are great deals for people who do not want to deposit and don’t mind filling in a few forms etc to get the site set up on their computer. Note though that some sites will have maximum amounts you can win from this free money. If its 50$ then you do not want to waste your time playing progressive jackpots etc.

Free plays will generally need a deposit to make them “real” you will get say 15 minute This will get transferred into real money only if a) you deposit and b) you play through your free money (certain games excluded) say 20 times. Note however that there are often maximum amounts that you can win on these promotions if it is 200$ profit maximum then stop wagering when you get their (if you have met the freeplay play through requirements). Depositing 20$ to get an additional 200$ even with the play through can be a very good thing to do. True you will often have to play games with high house edge to clear these bonuses (e.g. slots) but they are still very good deals if you are lucky enough to win with your free plays. If you enjoy playing slots etc and don’t want to risk too much money then these free plays are a great idea.

Non-sticky bonuses
This is a stupid name for this sort of bonus but this is the name that they are known as in the online world. These are plain vanilla bonuses, simple to understand and simple to clear. These are bonuses are often offered for depositing, re-depositing etc. although sometimes they are quite similar in playing them to the free cash bonuses.

The classic example would be deposit and get 100% free up to 100$. This looks to good to be true and there are fewer and fewer of these bonuses about without lots of restrictions in the small print. Still they do exist and are quite easy to understand. To cash out the bonus money you will have to play through the bonus a certain number of times. Say you have to play through the bonus AND the deposit 20 times and deposit 100$ with 100% matching bonus. That would be (100+100)*20=$4000 to clear the bonus.

That seems like a lot but it really is not. This is quite easy to do though and at 10$ a bet in say blackjack (playing 3 hands) you will clear this in no time at all (and at little expense). Just make sure if you are focused on claiming your bonus that you know that playing certain games may be excluded from counting for the play through requirements or even worse might VOID the bonus.

If you only play blackjack then going for a site in which no form of blackjack counts towards playing through the bonus isn’t necessarily a bad thing but the bonus better not have been what drew you to the site. Also make sure that playing blackjack does not debar you from claiming your bonus.

Remember that with some games you can auto-play (i.e. get the pc to play for you) this means that you can play some games that you don’t really enjoy if you want to speed up getting the bonus cleared.

It is worth looking at www.wizardofodds.com to see what restrictions etc have on the house edge etc. in these games. A bonus that needed to be played through 50 times on a game that had a 99% house edge ( player gets 99p to his pound) is actually worth nothing once it has been played through. Does that make it bad? Not necessarily. You could end up much more than this or you could end up down. If you enjoyed the experience and deposited 100$ then it only cost you 1$ for fun and the possibility of winning 20 or EVEN more $$ (of course you could even bust out though). The size of your bets doesn’t affect this ratio but it does increase your variance (the range of profits/losses which are likely). You are in effect gambling with ZERO house edge during this period which is no bad thing.

Sticky bonuses
These are bonuses that you cannot withdraw they will often refer to the bonuses as “play money only” or money for “wagering purposes only”. In effect if you got 200$ as a sticky bonus then when looking at your casino account take 200$ off your balance to see what you can withdraw. Does that make sticky bonuses worthless? Far from it….

Being able to keep your winnings is great but if you want to deposit 100$ and play 1$ games of blackjack then these bonuses are not that great. They do provide you with a safety net for the short duration of the bonus but that is all. These bonuses are perfect for people who want big wins and are willing to risk everything that they deposit on getting them. If you are new to casinos you might want to start with sites offering simpler less glamorous sounding bonuses first of all. A site offering 200$ sticky could be just as good as a site offering 100$ non-sticky bonus.

Terms and conditions generally
Always look at the other terms and conditions. If you are going to a site that we don’t recommend here then that is even more true.

Remember many bonuses are TIME DATED so do not let them lapse if you are intending on exploiting them.

Also do not try to outsmart casinos setting up multiple accounts. You risk them holding on to any money you have in your account and as well as that it is probably fraud and as well as being dishonest may actually be a crime in your country.

Look out for strange terms and conditions but remember that many of these casinos are in jurisdictions where you are unlikely to have any useful legal remedy – so do not think that simply that because something is in the contract it will be carried out. View these as statements of intention rather than anything more binding.

Getting paid
If you have a win and cash out then you may need to chase up the win. With the more respected casinos that will not be the case. With some of the others you would be waiting months and may only get paid through repeated inquiries. That said if ANY casino takes up to a week then really you have no cause for complaint. Too many people get annoyed for no good reason about the time some casinos take to pay. If they have to manually check details out then I think you do need to allow a bit of time.

Still make a note of every penny you are due and be ready to chase the casinos up if need be. If you are having difficulties then check you have fulfilled the terms and conditions and if in doubt pm me.

I can refer you to sites that specialise in helping players resolve these disputes and I am also probably talking to the casino involved (if one of Winningstart’s links) on a regular basis.

Mastering odds and strategy
If you are playing Blackjack then you should know how to play the game. www.wizardofodds.com contains basic strategy as does Play Blackjack like the Pros (Kevin Blackwood), it also deals with the effect that rules etc have on the odds or house edge in a game. Just make sure you know what the house edge is in the game you are playing and make sure you are not doing anything that improves it.

There will be more and more posts appearing on the forum about strategy for various casino games. Keep an eye out for them and if you have any good advice then share it with the rest of us.

Finally remember to manage your bankroll properly. It is more important to keep the fluctuations controllable and within what you can afford than to “fully maximise” bonuses or even to minimise the house edge in a game. Only bet what you can afford to lose is an old cliché but one with lots of truth in it.

Conclusion
Online casino games are great fun, easy to learn and quick to play. Enjoy yourself but beware of falling into any traps that are set either in terms and conditions or just some of the less than reputable casinos out there trying to make an easy buck or two without giving you a fair chance.
